DEENA BURNS HOLLINGSWORTH (1967)

Hollingsworth, Class of 1967, was a member of the first graduating class at Lakeside. As one of 200 sophomores that opened Lakeside, she played on the Vikings girls basketball team under Velinda Purcell and earned the first Viking Award for girls’ basketball.After graduation, she attended the University of Wyoming and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She served in the US Army Nurse Corp, helping save lives during the Vietnam War in Southeast Asia. Following the military, she completed her master’s at the University of Colorado. She then taught nursing at UW while her husband finished school. The family then moved to Northern Virginia when her husband took a job with US Senator Alan K Simpson. In 1998 she returned to school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and spent the last 23 years of a 50- year nursing career as an Advanced Practice Provider.Hollingsworth has served as the National President of the Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Nurses, President of the Northern Virginia Region of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and remains active in both organizations. She has been a national, regional and local speaker on several topics and recently served as primary editor for the Core Review for Otorhinolaryngology Nursing. Now retired, Hollingsworth enjoys playing golf, including the yearly Lakeside Masters Tournament supporting Lakeside athletic teams.
