The Lakeside High School Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its eighth annual class of inductees on Saturday, February 21 at 11 a.m. at Lakeside High School. Former Viking legends across all sports will be represented in the Class of 2026, and this year the Hall will also honor the football and boys’ soccer state championship teams from 1970.
The new 29-member class includes 10 football inductees, two basketball players, five from soccer, two swimmers, a softball player, one from cross country, a gymnast, one coach, one track inductee and an athlete. All inductees must be present to get inducted and track star Steve Daniel (1969), who was voted into the Class of 2025, will be inducted this year.T
he Beth Cooley Cheerleading Award is going to Nancy Hall-Horvath, and the John Kicklighter Service Award is being given to Joe Reed. Also, current principal Susan Stoddard will be put into the Hall and honored with an award that will be named after her. The first two recipients of the Susan Stoddard Service Award will be Lakeside graduates Brad Spratte and Tom Balsamides.
Since its launch in 2019, the Hall of Fame and induction ceremony have grown in scale and this year will have previous inductees presenting the Hall of Fame jackets to the newest class, including members of the committee that select the student-athletes to be inducted. This includes inaugural inductee and long-time soccer coach Jim Mitchell, the 2023 John Kicklighter Service Award recipient and Hall of Fame President I.J. Rosenberg (1981 graduate), Class of 2023 inductee and former football and soccer star Mark Fleetwood (1979 graduate), Class of 2021 inductee and soccer star Chris Garner (1978 graduate), 2023 inductee Steve McKenna (1975 graduate) and 2022 inductee Claire Hubbard (1982 graduate) as well as new inductee Spratte, a 1982 graduate.
Players from the 1970 football and boys’ soccer teams will also be on hand.
