Newman, Class of 1981, swam for Lakeside all five years under Hall of Fame coach Ava Spinks. She started swimming competitively at the age of seven, participating in an AAU swim club outside of high school and held multiple records. During her five years at Lakeside, she led the Lady Vikings to three state championships (1977-78, 1981). Her specialty was the 100-yard butterfly which earned her two first place individual medals and two first place medals in relays. Other accolades include multiple Viking Awards, MVP awards and High School All-American certificates. After Lakeside, Newman attended the University of Georgia on a swimming scholarship under head coach Jack Bauerle, and during her two years at UGA she received multiple All-American certificates. She went on to graduate from Georgia State with a degree in Finance and worked in the banking industry. Newman found her way back to athletics through horses. She has competed in the Hunter/Jumper arena for the past twenty-two years in the United States Equestrian Federation. In 2012, her horse named ‘Suited for Business’ was named Horse of the Year in the 3’3” amateur owners division. Her two children Christina and James Fisher, who are also accomplished equestrians, altogether have nine Horse of the Year awards. Newman currently sits on the Wills Park Equestrian Renovation Foundation Board and resides in Milton.
