JOHN KICKLIGHTER SERVICE AWARD

I.J. ROSENBERG (1981)

Rosenberg, Class of 1981, played three different sports at Lakeside, participating on the baseball, basketball, and football teams, and is the winner of the John Kicklighter Service Award. On the diamond, he was a two-year varsity letterman and starting outfielder as a senior, hitting .331 with one home run and 19 RBIs. After Lakeside, Rosenberg attended the University of Alabama where he was the sports editor of the student newspaper. In the spring of 1984, head football coach Ray Perkins granted Rosenberg the opportunity to join the team and write about his experiences. The column, “Paper Tider”, made national headlines and at 22, Rosenberg became one of the youngest journalists to join the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. At the AJC, Rosenberg became the Braves’ Beat Writer during their worst-to-first season in 1991 and through four World Series and one World Championship chronicled the club for the city of Atlanta. He also wrote three popular books on the club, did radio and TV for WSB, and was a correspondent for Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and USA Today. His fourth book covered Atlanta United’s Championship Season in 2018. Rosenberg remained at the AJC for 13-plus years before going to Wall Street and Bear Stearns. He then returned to his passion, creating sports marketing company “Score Atlanta” in 2004. His legacies include founding Hall of Fames for both Lakeside and Georgia High School Football. Married to Riverwood High School graduate Beth Ann Botnick, Rosenberg has twin daughters and a son. Lindsey (basketball) and Ashley (track) participated in sports at the University of Georgia and Chase played quarterback for Hamilton College in New York.
